By Subhash at Freeda, Pali Hill. I had gone there for a manicure and right in front of me there was this guy, possibly in his 50s, giving a head massage to a client who looked like he was in heaven. Watching him, I was extremely tempted to try this out. And boy, was I glad I did. This was possibly the best head massage ever. Not your usual champi, Subhash had a more Balinese, smooth way of massaging the head and neck using his entire palm and not just the tips of the fingers. It was extremely relaxing and sleep inducing.

Mumbai Diva suggests that the next time you’re in the mood for a deeply relaxing head massage you head for Freeda and ask for Subhash.

1. Just around the Corner,Bandra : For salads, a chilled out fun atmosphere and some great looking crowd.

2. Crepe Station, Carter Road : For a view of the sea; salads or continental food; absolutely fresh fruit juice; as close to the goa feel as you can get.

3. Inorbit Mall foodcourt, Malad : When you want to combine eating with some retail therapy or cine therapy. It has one of the largest spreads form Mad-Over-Donuts to Sanskriti to thai food to dosas to Chinese…….

4. Pizzeria ( Not just Jazz by the Bay), Marine Drive : Go here for the breeze, the view, some not-so-bad pizzas and some chilled beer. Insist on a table by the windows.

5. Mahesh Lunch Home,Fort or Juhu : When you feel fishy or crabby!!!

6. Candies,Bandra: For the awesome array of delicious and pocket friendly food. Be ready to brave the crowd though.

Karaoke

There is nothing like singing at the top of one’s voice to drive away the blues at the end of the day. Music is a huge relaxant and, well, who amongst us does not want to prove their singing abilities, existant or non existant!!!!

There are various options for Karoke nights in Mumbai

Merlin’s at Hotel Orchid at Santa Cruz ( close to the domestic airport) is one such. They have karaoke nights everyday beginning 11 pm and going up to 2.30 am. You’ll see a lot of regulars here. The atmosphere is upbeat and the whole process is very well coordinated. You can put in your requests and await your turn. And also sing along when someone else’s turn it is.

Soul Fry at Bandra ( Pali Market) has Karaoke nights on Monday. The place is a riot with a generous helping of celebs on some days.

Not Just Jazz By The Bay on Marine Drive also boasts of Karaoke nights from time to time.

What could be better than having a karaoke set up at your own home…..provided of course the neighbors don’t call the cops. But if you’re one of those with good neighbors or large houses, you could actually have a karaoke set up at home. Karaoke DVDs are available at Landmark Bookstore at Infinity Mall, Andheri. Just slip them into your DVD player and watch the music and lyrics unfold on your LCD screen.

The other option is to subscribe to a site called www.meragana.com. This however requires a fairly fast net connection at home ( broadband) as the music is streaming. We tried this last weekend and it was amazing. 5 whole hours of Karaoke. And no, the neighbors didn’t call the cops!!

Pritam’s Dhaba

When you want melt- in- your- mouth Galouti kebabs. And when you want to loll on a charpai with a chilled beer and gossip with your friends.

Pritam’s Dhaba is split into two. You enter into a closed restaurant which at first glance looks pretty seedy. It may be too. My recommendation is the outside area which you step into on crossing the restaurant. It has a charpai ( Indian styled beds) setting and the normal table setting as well. Bag a charpai with your friends, call for drinks and just chill. It does appear a little ‘not so well lit’ and at first glance like I said may appear a bit seedy but the experience is phenomenal. And the food divine.

The fish starters are amazing, as is the galouti kebab. It is served on a small roti the size of the kebab itself and is absolutely sinfully delicious.

There is not a single dish that we have ever found fault with.

What MD likes: The charpai seating. Love it.

Taxxi & Vitamin K Store

I ran into Taxxi and Vitamin K store by chance while actually looking for another store. The name sounded intriguing so I wandered in.

My first impression? There are some stores that seem magical. As if there is a surprise or a hidden treasure around every corner. This one was exactly like that. With masses of clothes and accessories that are not massy at all.

Taxxi is a young brand by two young designers – Prachi and Arti while Vitamin K is a brand owned by Karishma.

I met the threesome over an afternoon to discuss their store ( all very journalistic) while they giggled and tried to count the number of times they had related the same story to other journalistic types.

So the three met during an exhibition and hit it off. Pained at the consignment system of supplying to stores – where you basically send your stuff and the payment comes in after a stipulated time depending on the number of unite sold, with the balance goods returned to you – they toyed with the idea of opening their own store. Taxxi and Vitamin K store happened in August 2007.

They do supply to other stores as well namely Either Or in Pune, Marmalade in Bangalore, Tamara in Hyderabad among others.

Since it is a designer store, the chances of finding clothes and accessories in duplicate is rare, thankfully. Very pretty tops, dresses, clutches, bags dot the store which is itself done up very eclectically and in soft lighting.

The pricing ranges from Rs 700- Rs 4000 for most clothes. A bit steep. My recommendation in to put yourself onto their SMS list. That way you’ll know about the sales and you can go loot then. I have done that.

What MD likes : The store appeals to my creative sense. I love the dresses which are versatile enough to be worn both during daytime and for an evening out.

All one has to do is to pay a returnable security amount, punch in a plan and start ordering. The books will be delivered to you within 24 hours of you having ordered. They will also pick up the books once you’ve finished reading them.

What MD likes: They give you a choice of 2 addresses – home and office- for pick up and drop. So it’s not like they have only my office address and I cannot have something delivered or picked up on Saturday. I have that option each time I log in.
